PALMITOS PARK COLLABORATES IN THE DIFFUSION AMONG STUDENTS OF THE CAMPAIGN "S.O.S. RAVENS OF GRAN CANARIA". |

Palmitos Park supports the diffusion of the campaign "S.O.S RAVENS OF GRAN CANARIA" organized by the Gran Canaria Ornithological Group and associations “A.V.A.F.E.S. Canarias”. Palmitos Park is strongly committed to the conservation of the environment and the biodiversity, both worldwide and in our archipelago. Therefore, Palmitos Park’s Educational Department supports the initiative of the Veterinary Association for the Attention of the Exotic and Wild Fauna of Canaries (A.V.A.F.E.S. Canarias, in Spanish) and of the Gran Canaria Ornithological Group through the distribution of informational leaflets and stickers of the campaign "S.O.S. Ravens in Gran Canaria" among the groups of students who visit the park during the summer. The endemic subspecies Corvus corax canariensis (Canarian Common Raven) is labelled as “Endangered Species”, according to the Red Book of the birds of Spain (SEO/birdLife). Scientists estimate that less than 10 nesting couples live in Gran Canaria and that the population is less than 30 specimens. The main reasons for this decline are related to the decrease of the shepherding and of dry-farmed crops in Gran Canaria. Likewise, the competition for the food, the possible hybridizations with the Pied Crow (Corvus albus), which was brought to the Islands, and the direct and indirect poisoning are rapidly reducing the size of the population. This situation requires the conservation of these species in order to protect the biodiversity of our island. For this reason, Palmitos Park wants to help with the diffusion of this campaign among students, because in order to preserve we must know the facts before. |
